"Why do human beings lie? Or, why do they fear the truth?
Everyone should fear a lie, but never fear the truth for the truth
comes from God! "

WHY FEAR THE TRUTH?
A bad habit, or rather, a weakness spread throughout the
world, is fear of the truth. This fear is so widespread that most
people do not realize how much they, or their personalities, have
lost due to constant lying.
Why do human beings lie? Or, why do they fear the truth?
Everyone should fear a lie, but never fear the truth for the truth
comes from God! This short narrative will focus not on the higher
meaning of the truth, but on the widespread bad habit of everyday
lying. Each lie, after all, is a trap that its author sets for himself.
Many stories written and published or told verbally, if closely
examined, reveal themselves as plain lies. That is the way it is from
politics to stories with close relatives. Don’t we often encounter
children who are afraid to tell their parents the truth? The child or
youth has surely realized that the truth and behavior according to
the truth in all aspects of life are not highly esteemed by adults. For
this reason, the truth is certainly not desired either. So is it any surprise
to find so many children who lie? Children are extremely
attentive observers, however, they cannot really tell the difference
between right and wrong. They simply imitate the adults, which,
in fact, is correct and necessary. It is sad that young people witness
so little truthfulness around them. Thinking about the many lies
told daily, even about the most insignificant things, it becomes
understandable why the high concept of the truth remains incomprehensible
even after children reach adulthood.
With each spoken lie a person loses something precious that
weakens him much more than he can possibly imagine. Many
unpleasant things that frequently oppress us, both great and small,
163
are often caused by the lies intertwined in our words and thoughts.
Yes, thoughts also, for very often a person makes a great effort to
contrive lies that will harm a fellow man.
Since here we are addressing only daily life in general, we
should mention a situation that happened a short while ago. A lady
sought a trustworthy person, someone honest and sincere above all
else, to take care of her teenage daughter. Because this job was
attractive in all respects including the pay, many women applied
for it. Among the applicants was a young woman who pleased the
lady the most. During their conversation about the position, the
lady suddenly remembered having seen the applicant some years
before at the house of an acquaintance, in fact, on the day that, for
some unknown reason, the woman had been fired.
The lady mentioned to the applicant that she highly valued
absolute sincerity, and that nothing was worse to her than a lie, no
matter how it was presented. Upon hearing those words the young
woman nodded in agreement, confirming that she also disapproved
of any kind of lie. She then presented two references and
declared that she had worked only at those two houses, from
which she had resigned. The lady then mentioned that, by chance,
she had seen the young woman at the house of an acquaintance
who had just returned from a long trip.
The girl’s embarrassment confirmed the fact that she had been
employed there and that she had been fired. When the lady told the
young woman that the job would have been hers if she had had the
courage to tell the truth, the girl revealed her true personality. She
became aggressive, and even vulgar, stating that it was no one’s
business where she had worked before. After speaking with hate,
she hastily left the house.
Following this episode, the lady became thoughtful and felt
somewhat dejected. The incident reminded her of a bitter experience
that had caused her much suffering and sadness. A lie told by
a so-called friend had caused her to lose the trust of someone
whom she liked very much. From that day onward she placed the
love for truth above all else.
